In the summer of 2019, the tooth brushing project was launched at the centre. Thanks to a donation from the Dental Faculty Association in Nijmegen and support from Dental Health International Netherlands (DHIN), Laura Beunk traveled to Armenia with a well-packed suitcase. The teaching program consists of training for the teachers, a training session for the parents, and instruction for the children. The lesson materials were written by Laura, supported by supplies from DHIN, and translated into Armenian by Yester. The training sessions were conducted by Laura and Yester together. By now, Yester is so familiar with the topic that she can also give the training sessions herself. In daily practice, Armine (our nurse) is responsible for the brushing sessions.
The tooth brushing project is an ongoing initiative. For the children, tooth brushing is a regular part of their day. In the dining room, there is a separate space with a sink and mirrors where the toothbrushes, provided by DHIN, are kept. This allows the children to get used to brushing their teeth daily, which helps to prevent oral health problems. In the future, there are plans to collaborate with a dentist in Gyumri to get the children accustomed to dental visits as well. Additionally, we also focus on the effects of sugar and other foods on the teeth and provide the children with a balanced food program.
